YouTube Introduces Super Chat Replies and Enhances Monetization Tools

YouTube introduces Super Chat replies for creator-viewer interaction and new monetization tools: timestamped AFG violations & upcoming A/B testing.

Transcript

Super Chat replies, also known as Super Chat threads, have been in an experimental phase since last Wednesday. It’s a very aggressive experiment, with 50% of Super Chats already having this feature enabled. Whether it will eventually roll out, we’ll find out soon enough. You can click on it, and a small reply button appears. Essentially, it opens up a second chat window; on mobile, it’s a swipeable panel that you can close again.

It’s a very interesting feature because you can also reply to it for free to provide additional context for the Super Chat. This means that someone who might have asked a question with a Super Chat can clarify it further or respond to it. Other users who want to answer can also do so in the Super Chat reply. I find this very interesting. What about you? Do you use Super Chats often? And if so, would you be happy with the ability to reply? Let me know in the comments!

Next up is monetization and a topic called AFG violations (Advertiser-Friendly Guidelines). When your video has limited ad suitability, the yellow symbol appears. The new feature is that timestamps now indicate where in the video there are guideline violations. This is essentially a good thing in terms of transparency. However, there are some limitations: if there are multiple different violations, only one example is shown, not every instance of the same violation. For instance, if I use profanity in the video and the title, only one violation will be displayed, and you have to search for the others yourself.

This feature is currently only available to creators who use self-certification. As I’ve already hinted at, these timestamps don’t just apply to the video; they also show up when there are violations in the thumbnail or title.

Lastly, some good news about A/B testing, which YouTube now calls “Test and Compare.” The 1% rollout starts on May 21st and will be increased to 50% by June 3rd. The rest will be added throughout June. This means you should start testing alternative thumbnails soon. “Test and Compare” is just around the corner.

That’s it for today’s important information. Next week, we already had a live stream where we analyzed channels, so-called channel audits. Next week, we’ll have another live stream right away to get back into our rhythm. Of course, there will be another Q&A session. If you have any questions about YouTube, feel free to ask them here in the comments, during the live stream, or on gg/YouTube and gg/youtubegaming.

If you have any further questions, leave them in the comments. Otherwise, see you next week for another update! Take care and keep going!
