YouTube Analytics: Understanding 'Casual' vs. 'Regular' Viewers

Discover new insights with YouTube's updated analytics. Now, viewers are categorized into New, Casual (1-5 months engagement), and Regular (6+ months) segments.

Let’s talk about the YouTube updates. Audience segments are now available in YouTube Analytics, splitting new and returning viewers into more granular categories: New Viewers, Casual Viewers (those who occasionally watch the channel for 1 to 5 months out of the last 12 months), and Regular Viewers (those who watch the channel for more than 6 months out of the last 12 months, which is apparently a tough milestone to reach). Creator Insider mentions this, so expect a lower Regular Viewer count compared to Casual Viewers.

Casual Viewers will likely be your largest audience segment. The rollout began this week, and while I haven’t seen it on our channels or clients’ channels yet, it should be completed within the next 4 to 6 weeks. Keep an eye out for it. If you have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below.

Let’s stick to YouTube Studio and YouTube Studio Mobile, as we’re getting an upgraded comment filter. Instead of just “Newest Comment,” you can now filter by “Most Relevant” content and set that as your default. However, it won’t change your existing defaults; you can still keep the “Show me the newest comment first” filter as default if you prefer. I think this is crucial for creators who receive a high volume of unfiltered comments. It’s a valuable addition for them.

For everyone else, you can simply stick with the “Show me the newest comment first” setting. Giving creators control over their default comment sorting is always a positive change.

That’s all for today. Thank you for joining me to discuss YouTube updates. If you have any questions, please leave them below—they don’t have to be related to today’s topic. We can even create a tutorial guide if needed. See you next week for more YouTube updates! Take care and bye-bye.
