Understanding Shorts Sampling

Shorts sampling is a feature that allows viewers and other creators to take segments of your existing videos to create their own Shorts. This functionality essentially turns your content into a resource for others, potentially increasing the reach and visibility of your original work as it is repurposed across the platform.

By default, YouTube enables this permission for all videos uploaded by a Creator. This means that unless you manually change your settings, your content is available for others to sample.

Managing Your Sampling Permissions

Depending on whether you want to protect a single piece of content or update your entire library, there are two primary ways to manage these permissions within YouTube Studio.

Adjusting Settings for a Single Video

If you have a specific video that you do not want others to use for sampling, you can adjust the settings on an individual basis:

1. Open YouTube Studio.
2. Select the specific video you wish to modify.
3. Scroll down through the video details and settings until you find the sampling permission toggle.

Bulk Editing via YouTube Studio

For Creators with a large volume of content, updating videos one by one is inefficient. To change permissions for multiple videos at once:

1. Navigate to the content list in YouTube Studio.
2. Select the checkboxes for all the videos you wish to edit.
3. Click on “Edit.”
4. Select “Content usage for Shorts” from the menu to apply your preferred sampling settings across all selected videos simultaneously.

What Happens When You Disable Sampling?

It is important to understand the consequences of changing your permissions after a video has already been sampled by others. If you decide that a video should no longer be available for sampling, YouTube does not leave existing sampled Shorts untouched.

Once the permission is disabled, any existing Shorts that used samples from that specific video will be automatically muted. Following this initial action, those sampled Shorts will be permanently deleted after 30 days. This ensures that your current preferences regarding content usage are respected and enforced across the platform.

As a Creator, you have the option to allow your viewers to sample your videos. By default, this permission is enabled for all your videos.
