Beware: Sophisticated Scam Targeting Creators with Fake CEO Videos

A new scam involves private videos featuring a fake YouTube CEO sharing encrypted documents about monetization updates.

Transcript

This week there are no YouTube updates, but I want to warn you about a current scam that is quite sophisticated and might deceive the untrained eye. It involves private videos being uploaded to channels that look official, which are then shared with other people, mainly Creators. In these videos, you see a fake YouTube CEO asking you to download an encrypted document to view the latest updates on YouTube monetization.

Of course, you shouldn’t do this! These updates are publicly available and are released by official YouTube channels like Creator Insider, PE channels such as mine or my PE colleague’s on Twitter, in the forum, and in YouTube blog posts. They will never be sent to your email address as an encrypted email or document referring to a private video. Got it? Great! Please don’t open such links, whether they come via email or appear in the description of a private video.

It’s also irrelevant how this works in the backend and that YouTube apparently has difficulties removing these allegedly official channels, even though they introduced a policy against impersonation last year. It’s all a bit tricky again. I hope it will be fixed soon. Of course, I’ll keep you updated. Until then, please stay vigilant! If you have any questions about YouTube, feel free to write them in the comments so we can discuss what concerns you the most.

I’ll see you next week if there are further updates. Until then, take care and keep going!
