How it works: YouTube Membership Gifting
Explains how viewers gift YouTube memberships in the live chat and how YouTube selects recipients.
Understanding YouTube Membership Gifting
YouTube has introduced a beta feature called Membership Gifting, designed to foster community growth and reward viewer loyalty. This feature allows existing channel members to purchase memberships on behalf of other viewers in the live chat, effectively expanding the Creator’s member base while providing a gift to the community.
How to Gift Memberships in Live Chat
To participate in membership gifting, you must first be a member of the channel yourself. Once you have an active membership, you can gift memberships to others during a live stream by following these steps:
- Access the Supers Menu: In the YouTube Live chat window, locate and click on the “Supers” button. This is the same menu used for sending Super Chats and Super Stickers.
- Select Membership Gifting: From the available options in the Supers menu, choose “Membership Gifting.”
- Choose the Quantity: You can then decide how many memberships you would like to purchase for other viewers.
- Complete Payment: Confirm your payment method to finalize the transaction.
Once the payment is confirmed, YouTube handles the distribution of these memberships automatically.
How Recipients Are Selected
A key aspect of this feature is that the gifter does not manually pick which specific users receive the membership. Instead, YouTube uses an automated system to distribute the gifts.
While there is a random element involved, the system prioritizes engagement. Specifically, YouTube distributes the gifted memberships to the most active subscribers currently present in the live chat. This ensures that the memberships go to viewers who are actively participating in the conversation and showing high levels of interest in the stream.
Implications for Community Engagement
Membership gifting serves as a powerful tool for both Creators and their audiences. For the viewer, it is a way to support their favorite Creator while simultaneously giving back to the community. For the Creator, this feature can lead to an increase in total membership numbers and encourage more viewers to stay active in the chat in hopes of receiving a gift.
Because this was introduced as a beta feature, its availability and specific functionality are tied to the platform’s ongoing updates to monetization and viewer interaction tools. By lowering the barrier to entry for new members, gifting helps turn casual subscribers into official channel members, potentially increasing long-term subscriber retention.
