YouTube is preparing to roll out several updates to its Membership features and live streaming capabilities. Based on recent YouTube office hours, these changes aim to provide Creators with more tools to engage their communities and expand the reach of their live content.

From new gifting options to expanded access for exclusive content and the general release of vertical streaming, here is a detailed breakdown of what is coming to the platform.

Expanding Community Reach with Free Member Giving

One of the most significant updates is the introduction of “Free Member Giving.” This feature allows Creators to gift YouTube memberships to their viewers for free, effectively removing the financial barrier for fans who want to experience the perks of a membership.

Rollout Timeline

The rollout for Free Member Giving is expected to begin by the end of October, with the implementation process continuing through mid-November. Creators should expect a window of approximately two to three weeks for the feature to become fully available across the platform.

Capacity and Tier Limits

YouTube has increased the number of memberships that can be gifted. Creators will be able to award two packages of five memberships each (2 x 5). This functionality extends up to the 49th tier or the 49,999 level, providing significant flexibility for Creators with complex membership structures.

The Revenue Caveat

It is important for Creators to manage their financial expectations regarding this feature. YouTube has confirmed that these free memberships do not count toward the Creator’s revenue. Because these are gifted for free, they do not generate additional monthly income (such as a hypothetical €50 per month). Early Access to Exclusive Member-Only Videos

To help Creators add more value to their membership offerings, YouTube is introducing a feature for early access to exclusive Member-only videos. The rollout for early access is scheduled to begin with a small group of Creators in mid-October. Following this initial phase, the feature will be expanded to a larger group.

Unlike the Member Giving feature, there is currently no confirmed end date for this rollout. Creators should anticipate a more gradual deployment process as YouTube tests the feature with the initial group before a wider release.

Vertical Live Streaming Moves Out of Beta

In addition to membership updates, YouTube is making a significant change to how live content is discovered and consumed via the Shorts feed. Vertical live streaming is officially leaving its beta phase.

General Availability

Starting October 25th, vertical live streaming will be available to all Creators. This move integrates live broadcasting directly into the Shorts feed, allowing Creators to reach a mobile-first audience that is already scrolling through short-form content.

Technical Considerations: The “Red Live Ring”

While the feature is moving to general availability, there is still an open question regarding the user interface when multiple streams are active. Specifically, when a Creator is running two streams simultaneously—such as one horizontal and one vertical stream, or two horizontal streams—it is not yet clear which stream the “red live ring” around the profile picture will link to.

The red live ring serves as a primary visual cue to viewers that a Creator is currently live. Understanding which stream takes priority in this visual indicator is crucial for Creators who utilize multi-stream setups to ensure their audience is directed to the intended broadcast. Further information from product management is expected on this specific detail.

Membership Updates are on the horizon: In the YouTube office hours, we’ve gathered some of your questions and already received a few answers. Let’s dive right in with Free Member Giving, which allows Creators to gift YouTube memberships for free. This is set to roll out by the end of October and be completed by mid-November, so in about 2-3 weeks. You know YouTube: It always takes a bit of time for everything to be fully implemented.

The number of memberships that can be gifted has been increased to 2 x 5, meaning two packages of 5 memberships each can be awarded, of course up to the 49th tier or the 49,999 level. It was also confirmed again: These free memberships that you give away do not count towards your revenue. So, there won’t be an additional €50 per month—that would have been too good to be true. But just for completeness: That’s not going to happen.

We have another Membership Update I can share with you. It’s about early access to exclusive Member-only videos. This is set to start with a small group in mid-October and then be expanded further. No end date has been mentioned yet, so it will likely take a bit longer than the 2-3 weeks we’re seeing with Member Giving.

Vertical live streaming in the Shorts feed is leaving beta and will be available to all Creators from October 25th. However, we’re still waiting for a response from the product manager regarding which stream the red live ring around your profile picture will link to when two streams are running simultaneously, for example, a horizontal and a vertical stream or two horizontal streams.
