We need to talk about YouTube Shorts: starting on October 15th, they will support a duration of up to 3 minutes. Of course, you can still upload shorter shorts as well, no problem there. Vertical videos published before October 15th will continue to be treated as long-form videos. New videos with square or vertical resolution and a duration of less than 180 seconds will become shorts. Initially, uploads are limited to desktop since the shorts creation tools like the Shorts Editor or the Remix button under videos will only be updated early next year.
Long shorts need a better name and won’t initially appear in the shorts feed but can show up in the home feed or “Up Next.” It’s important that you don’t think you’re suddenly creating long shorts and everything will be great. They’ll be somewhat limited at first until the data is processed.
Long shorts are part of the shorts monetization program. If you’re in the YouTube Partner Program and earn revenue from shorts, you can also make ad revenue from long shorts. Heads up: monetization is based on views, so it might be beneficial to split a 3-minute video into three 1-minute videos linked together to get more views and thus more earnings.
We’ve already asked YouTube if there will be a higher share for longer shorts based on watch time rather than views.
Regarding protected content: Long shorts that use copyrighted content, whether audio or video, will be site-wide blocked and not recommended. That means they won’t just be hidden nationally, but won’t be recommended at all. If you create long shorts, please remember to use your own content and avoid protected content. There are no penalties or sanctions if you accidentally use protected content, but YouTube failed to secure the necessary rights in time.
If you have questions about long shorts or name suggestions, feel free to drop them in the comments. I’ll take them with me to the meeting on Monday where we’ll discuss this thoroughly with YouTube. I’ll then respond in the comments.
Subscribe to the channel to stay updated. Thank you so much for 1000 subscribers! This is a labor of love for me as I enjoy educating creators about YouTube. I’m thrilled that 1000 people find this valuable and have subscribed. To celebrate this milestone, we’ve created 25 small swag packages with caps and jute bags. If you’d like one, please comment something in the comments with an orange heart for KW Media. On October 12th, we’ll go through the comments and reply to those whose comments we particularly liked. Either we’ll message you directly if we have your contact details, or we’ll ask you to send them to us.
Onward to the next 99,000 subscribers so we can get that play button! Thank you, and see you next week for more YouTube updates. Until then, take care!
